The government has issued a call for tenders for restoration of the bastions on the front part of the Cittadella in Victoria, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said today.

The works will form part of the project being undertaken by the Resources Ministry to restore the bastions of Malta and Gozo. The project will be largely financed by the European Union.

Mrs Debono was speaking during the launching of the masterplan for the restoration, consolidation and management of the Cittadella. The masterplan was drawn up by Politecnica Ingegneria ed Architettura, which carried out consultations with the ministry and other interested parties.

Mrs Debono said her ministry was working on ways to source funding for the implementation of the plan. The ultimate aim, she said, was for more life to be given to the Cittadella.

Ongoing works include a geological survey of the foundations of the town. A call for tenders will be issued shortly for restoration works on the oldest part of the town.

Other works will include a clean-up and consolidation of the ruins, restoration of the existing buildings and the setting up of facilities for visitors.

The masterplan proposals form part of an exhibition which will remain open through July at the Arts and Culture Centre in the Cittadella.
