Chelsea achieve historic double

Everton miss out on Euro berth

While Chelsea ended the 2009-10 season with flying colours after claiming a league and FA Cup double for the first time in their history, Everton finished empty-handed.

In their last six years in the Premier League, Chelsea won the crown three times, finished twice second and once third.

Everton can't be compared with the mega-rich Londoners. Yet, over the same period, the Toffees claimed fourth place once and twice fifth. Their last honour came in 1995 when they lifted the FA Cup.

Chelsea's scoring machine played havoc with many defences and on 14 occasions they scored three or more goals in one match.

Chelsea only failed to score once in their draw at Birmingham. Their only home defeat came against Manchester City. The five away upsets include one to Everton 1-2.

The Blues of Merseyside missed the European boat by two points. Their away record of seven defeats and seven draws shattered their hopes of improving their final position.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti had an outstanding season at Chelsea. Everton's David Moyes also enjoyed a fine campaign and in February, he was over the moon when his team chalked up back-to-back wins over Chelsea and Manchester United at Goodison Park.

The Chelsea fans opted for Frank Lampard as their player of the season as the England stalwart again reached double figures in terms of goals from his midfield position.

One of the stars of the World Cup could be Everton's top midfielder Steven Pienaar... he's flying the colours of hosts South Africa.

In knock-out contests, Chelsea were bundled out of the Champions League in the second round by Inter, led by their former manager Jose Mourinho.

In the FA Cup, Chelsea beat Portsmouth in the final. In the League Cup, they lasted up to the quarter-finals, going out in a penalty shoot-out 3-4 to Blackburn.

Everton's hopes in the Europa League were dashed by Benfica, who beat them at home and away in the group phase.

In the FA Cup, the Blues went down to Tottenham 0-2 at White Hart Lane in the fourth round. Their downfall in the League Cup came at home, losing 1-2 to Birmingham in round four.

League prize money

Chelsea (1st) £16,000,000.

Everton (8th) £10,400,000.
