Mepa to ensure registration of waste carriers
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority warned today that it would be monitoring the transport of waste to ensure tha all operators are properly licensed.
All vehicles carrying wastes are required to register with Mepa and obtain clearance for such activities from the Environmental Permitting and Industry Unit. The aim of the registration is to ensure that all vehicles/vessels that are carrying waste are up to standard and that no waste is released into to the environment through spillages, fly tipping or deposition of such wastes in locations not permitted for such use.
The Authority said people were being invited to report any fly tipping on Mepa's emergency service number 2069 9595.
Further information related to waste carrier registration and waste management in general may be accessed through MEPA website on www.mepa.org.mt .

What we need urgently now for the Transport Authority to do a spot check on trucks and container's drivers insurance and licence. I bet that most of those driving such vehicles don't have them. I have noticed that when ever these drivers are involved in an accident its always that they don,t carry such documents with them when on the job. Malta lacks behind other countries when it comes to enforcment of the rule of law.

How will we know if a vehicle carrying wastes is authorised to do so or not? Why not issuing some kind of label/sticker/indication to be stuck on the vehicle for all to see? I think the monitoring will be more visible and realistic.

Creditable initiative at long last !!
But let's just hope that civic-minded individuals won't be taken for another ride like they were by the Transport Authority over the reporting of smoke-belching automobiles!!!
