The youngest case of drunkenness admitted to Mater Dei Hospital in the first four months of this year was only 14 years old. The eldest was aged 76. There were 44 people admitted in a state of drunkenness in that period, Health Minister Joseph Cassar told Parliament in reply to a question by Labour MP Carmelo Abela. Such cases were categorised as alcohol-caused intoxication without the patient being dependent on alcohol.
The figure did not include persons who had been examined in the emergency department but were never admitted to hospital.
