Police in South Africa today said they have taken permanent control of security at four World Cup stadiums, including the venue where England play their next game.

Officers have taken over security duties from stewards at four stadiums, including Green Point in Cape Town, following a row over stewards' pay.

A South African Police Service Spokesman said: "The 2010 Fifa World Cup organising committee South Africa (OC) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have agreed that police will take over security services at four stadiums for the duration of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

"They are the Soccer City, Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Green Point in Cape Town and Durban Stadiums. The decision was taken following a meeting today between the SAPS and the OC."

Chief executive of the organising committee Danny Jordaan said: "The 2010 FIFA World Cup must remain a special celebration of Africa's first FIFA World Cup.

"We will ensure that the event environment is one that contributes to this celebration."

SAPS national commissioner General Bheki Cele said: "Our priority is the safety of the tournament and the country as a whole.

"We will perform our responsibilities with diligence and pride."

The authorities have reassured England fans attending the match against Algeria on Friday there is nothing to worry about.

Police took control of Green Point on Monday night for the match between Italy and Paraguay.

Speaking afterwards, City spokesman Pieter Cronje said the last minute takeover was very successful, and added: "England fans have no reason for concern."

Protests have been staged at the different venues following a labour dispute between Stallion Security Consortium Ltd and stewards employed by the company.
