Italian teams Metamarine Corse and Baia Attolini clinched overall victory at the 2010 Malta Grand Prix after winning yesterday's Endurance Race along the Sliema coast.
There was some disappointment for local powerboat enthusiasts as Aaron Ciantar's Ukrainian Spirit were only conspicuous by their absence at the weekend after the team lost their race against time to fine-tune the new engines on their Chaudron boat.
In the Evolution class, Metamarine Corse, manned by Marco Pennesi and Gianpaolo Montavoci, improved on their second-place in Saturday's Sprint Race by seizing victory in yesterday's Endurance Race to go top of the world championship standings after two rounds.
The Italian duo pipped Germans Siegfried Greve and Douglas Verbanck, of Cranefields Wines, to first place while Lucas Oil's Nigel Hook and Michael Silfverberg had to settle for third place.
Metamarine Corse were second in the championship at the start of racing yesterday, four points behind erstwhile leaders Furnibo, winners of Saturday's Sprint Race. The latter failed to hold on to the no.1 spot after missing out on a top-three finish with Metamarine Corse taking advantage to move ahead on 64 points.
Lucas Oil gained a total of 24 points from this weekend's races to finish second overall in the Malta Grand Prix of the Sea, just one point ahead of Cranefields Wines.
Baia Attolini strengthened their grip on top position in the Supersport class after they bounced back from a disappointing fourth place in Saturday's Sprint Race - won by Karelpiu - by posting the fastest time in yesterday's second leg.
The Italian trio of Stefano Acanfora, Renato Guidi and Vittorio Foglia Manzillo stormed to victory in yesterday's 16-lap Endurance Race, finishing ahead of Britain's Team 26 and Seagull Ukrainian Spirit.
In the Malta GP overall classification, Baia Attolini (27 points) finished ahead of Seagull Ukrainian Spirit (24) and Team 26 (21).
The third round of the Powerboat World Championship will be held in Sardinia from July 9-11.
