The Labour Party and the party's Siggiewi committee have filed a judicial protest claiming that the government's decision not to renew the lease of the property used as a Labour Party Club in Siggiewi is discriminatory and a breach of human rights.
The protest was filed by, among others, PL President Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and the president of the Siggiewi PL club, Nicholas Cassar, against the Commissioner of Lands, the Director General (Properties Division) and the Siggiewi Local Council.
The PL pointed out that while it was being claimed that the government-owned club premises were to be transferred to the local council for use as a daycare centre once the lease expired, the local council had acquired a plot of land to build a day care centre and a development permit had been issued for the purpose.
They said that the Commissioner of Land's refusal to renew the lease was motivated by partisan politics instigated mostly by PN candidate and councillor Karol Aquilina.
This action was illegal, abusive and discriminatory , especially since the Nationalist Party also used government-owned properties and had been given preferential treatment.
The PL called on the authorities to stop further action against the club.
