Malta will take centre stage at a large-scale event at the European Parliament between October 4 and 7.

All five Maltese MEPs are teaming up to organise Malta Week with the objective of providing a platform to promote Maltese art, crafts, music, food and drink in the EU institutions.

Addressing a news conference yesterday, MEPs Simon Busuttil and Louis Grech said the overall goal was to draw up a programme which would enhance Malta's name and image and present a contemporary image of the island reflecting its rich culture, history and aspirations.

All events will take place in a tent purposely set up in the square in front of the EP building next to Place du Luxembourg, a popular square which sees thousands of commuters every day.

The tent will be decorated with artefacts, like the għonnella and luzzu boats, and will host activities that reflect Maltese culture. The traditional will be juxtaposed against screens and modern technology to reflect contemporary Malta.

A showcase of paintings by a number of Maltese artists will be set up while artists like Chiara and Ira Losco will perform during two concerts.

During Malta Week, a special Maltese dish will be served in the European Parliament canteen, which is frequented by hundreds every day.
