A man found in possession of 30 sachets of heroin will be embarking on a drug rehabilitation programme while in prison as he wants to rid himself of his addiction problem.

Pleading not guilty to trafficking in heroin and the possession of heroin and cocaine on and before Friday, 26-year-old Alan Saliba of Sta Lucija this morning asked the court to place him in a rehabilitation programme.

He told the police he sold drugs to finance his addiction so as not to steal and cause more problems for his family, Police Inspector Robert Vella said.

Inspector Vella said Mr Saliba admitted to the police after he was caught that he was selling heroin and that he had already sold some sachets by the time he was arrested.

He was remanded in custody.
