Bolton get lift from South Korean Lee
Burnley's first taste of Premiership turns sour
While Bolton Wanderers have now played in the Premier League for 11 seasons, not consecutive, Burnley's debut had a sad ending as the club was demoted back to the Championship.
In their first two campaigns, Bolton had also lasted for one year, in 1995-96 and in 1997-98, but now they are enjoying a ninth successive season in the Premier League. Burnley can indeed look at Bolton for inspiration to return to the top flight and strive to stay.
After their relegation, the Burnley board decided to hang on to their boss Brian Laws, having arrived from Sheffield Wednesday.
Burnley's seven wins at Turf Moor and a sequence of draws made the fans keen to keep flying the flag even if their favourites failed on their travels, losing 17 times, the worst in the Premier League.
Bolton were also strong at their own patch, but lost 12 on the away front.
Chung-Yong Lee, on many clubs' radar in the summer transfer window, made his mark for Bolton.
The South Korea midfielder gave the likes of Kevin Davies many a killer pass that led to crucial goals which kept Bolton away from relegation.
Laws was a surprise choice for Burnley after he left Sheffield Wednesday in the doldrums of the Championship. Yet, clubs who have their hands tied due to low budgets cannot afford to go for glittering names.
Club record signing, Steven Fletcher (joined from Hibernian) was the top player for the Clarets.
In the FA Cup, Bolton held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw at home in the fifth round but lost the replay 0-5. In the League Cup, they fell to Chelsea 0-4 at Stamford Bridge in round four.
Burnley had less exciting moments in the domestic knock-out competitions as they lost at Reading 0-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup and were defeated by unfashionable Barnsley at Oakwell at the third hurdle 2-3.
Relegated clubs, like Burnley, continued to receive that much needed cash injection from the Premier League to help them after their demotion. The league prize money for Bolton and Barnsley were: Bolton (14th) £5,600,000; Burnley (18th) £2,400,000.
