A storm water tunnel will be built in Żebbuġ as part of a €55 million flood relief project around Malta to divert rainwater through underground canals into valleys.
The planning authority yesterday approved the construction of a 750-metre long tunnel that will pass through the centre of Żebbuġ and channel rainwater into Wied Qirda.
The €55 million infrastructure project is designed to target 12 localities prone to flooding: Balzan, Lija, Attard, L-Iklin, Birkirkara, Gżira, Msida, Żebbuġ, Qormi, Marsa, Żabbar and Marsascala. It should be completed by 2013.
The rainwater will be diverted in the tunnel beneath High Road, St Anthony's Road and Siġġiewi Road in Żebbuġ and end up in Wied Qirda. In a separate but related application, the planning authority approved a full development application to improve an existing storm water channel in Qormi and Marsa.
