John Spiteri, 66, of Mosta, this morning admitted in court to breaking an elderly man's nose in a scuffle in Mosta on Tuesday morning.

Mr Spiteri and his victim Carnelo Bonnici, 74, are both former hawkers and got into a fight over a longstanding argument related to their business.

Mr Bonnici admitted to having tried to seriously injure Mr Spiteri after Mr Spiteri attacked him with a piece of wood.

Magistrate Antonio Vella said this was a serious case and he had considered a jail term against both men as such things were unacceptable. However after considering the facts of the case he condemned Mr Spiteri to five months imprisonment suspended for a year against a personal guarantee of €2,000 while Mr Bonnici was handed a three-month prison term suspended for a year and a personal guarantee of €2,000.
