A guided tour of the Mnajdra and Ħaġar Qim temples is being organised by Heritage Malta on June 20 and 21 to mark the summer solstice.

The agency said that in a bid to provide an enhanced experience to visitors, only 40 visitors will be allowed to Mnajdra Temples while 10 places will be available for Ħaġar Qim Temples.

Sunrise on the first day of each season underlines the relationship between the temples and celestial bodies.

Although it is not known for certain whether these orientations were intentional, they are so systematic that this is very probable.

In prehistoric agricultural societies, observation of the motion of the stars, the moon and sun could have been related to the changing seasons and times of planting and harvesting crops.

Tickets for the solstice event are €15 per person and €10 for Heritage Malta members on a first come first served basis.

Tickets may be bought from Heritage Malta sites or museums. Please call Queries on tel: 2295 4000.

The meeting point will be the Ħagar Qim main entrance at 5.30 a.m.
