A 27-year-old man from Tarxien this morning pleaded not guilty to slightly injuring police officer Clive Mangion and damaging his personal car last Sunday at around 10.30 p.m.

He also pleaded not guilty to resisting the officer, assaulting and threatening him.

Clayton Azzopardi was charged with breaching the peace and conditions which had been imposed by a court. He was accused of using vulgar language in public while drunk, driving under the influence, negligently and carelessly and slightly injuring passer-by Mikjca Katelia.

He also pleaded not guilty to relapsing and refusing to give his particulars to the police.

The court heard how Mr Azzopardi had had a tiff with a policeman, who he mistook for PC Mangion and had a go at him.

In a separate arraignment, Roderick Muscat, 22, of Tarxien, pleaded not guilty to acting as an accomplice.

He also pleaded not guilty to breaching a number of conditions imposed by another court, relapsing and committing a crime within the operative of a suspended sentence.

Magistrate Miriam Haymen remanded both men in custody pending a decision on bail.
