The EU's Commissioner for Education, Androulla Vassiliou, said today that the European Union wanted to have the suspension of EU funds for educational programmes lifted as soon as possible. The Commission is analysing the detailed information it has received from Malta on measures taken to strengthen the management and control systems of the National Agency responsible for the administration of the programmes.

Ms Vassiliou discussed the issue with Education Minister Dolores Cristina in Brussels today.

The Ministry of Education said that a meeting is planned with the Commission towards the end of the month to discuss the pending issues. Following the meeting in Brussels the Commission will send a mission to Malta to assess the implementation of the actions taken.

Commissioner Vassiliou confirmed that in the case of the Youth in Action Programme, projects can go ahead as planned for applicants who have been formally notified of selection of projects under the 2010 call.

The commissioner and the minister also discussed the education targets in the context of the Europe 2020 strategy.

The minister was accompanied by the permanent representative of Malta to the European Union, Richard Cachia Caruana.
