Hitzlsperger: Avram Grant made his first signing as West Ham manager yesterday as he landed Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger on a free transfer from Lazio. Grant has moved quickly to bolster his squad by persuading Hitzlsperger to agree a three-year contract with the Premier League club.
Gay award: Jose Aurelio Gay has been rewarded for keeping Real Zaragoza in the Primera Division with a one-year contract extension. Gay was the club's reserve-team coach when he was put in temporary charge of the senior side in December following the dismissal of Marcelino Garcia Toral.
Bonucci: Genoa are engaged in talks to buy the other 50 per cent of Leonardo Bonucci's contract from Bari. The 23-year-old Italy defender is currently co-owned by both clubs. Genoa are said to have offered Bari the other 50 per cent of another of their co-owned player, Riccardo Meggiorini plus cash.

Horse racing: English champion jockey Ryan Moore celebrated a rare classic double yesterday as Workforce won the Epsom Derby in record time and gave trainer Sir Michael Stoute his fifth race win. Moore, 26, had won the Epsom Oaks on Friday with Snow Fairy and became the first jockey since Kieren Fallon in 2004 to do the Oaks/Derby double. The winner's time of 2min 31.33sec was nearly a second faster than the previous best course and distance time set by Lammtarra in the 1995 Derby.
Tennis: World number six Svetlana Kuznetsova has been given a wild card for this month's AEGON International in Eastbourne. The Russian, who won last year's French Open, is a former champion having triumphed on the south coast back in 2004.
Golf: Rookie Rickie Fowler fired a six-under 66 on Friday to match the two-round tournament record at the Memorial with a 13-under total of 131 that gave him a three-shot lead over Justin Rose. Fowler's exploits took some of the spotlight off Phil Mickelson's bid to supplant Tiger Woods atop the world rankings. Woods started the day just inside the projected cut line after a first-round even-par 72.
Basketball: US collegiate basketball coaching legend John Wooden died on Friday at the age of 99, the University of California said. The university where Wooden coached for 27 seasons said he died of natural causes. Wooden coached UCLA's Bruins to an unprecedented 10 NCAA championships, including seven in a row from 1967-1973. He went 620-147 in his 27 seasons at UCLA and posted a career record of 667-161 in 29 years of college coaching.
Cricket: Former Pakistan captain Younus Khan yesterday won his appeal against an indefinite ban and is now likely to be considered for the national team ahead of their England tour. Younus was one of seven players who were banned or fined in March this year. The penalties came after an inquiry committee investigated on and off-field problems during the team's tours to the UAE, New Zealand and Australia.
