What are these?
Jurgen Azzopardi took this picture this morning while diving off Ta Cenc, Gozo.
He said he came across swarms of what looked like baby jellyfish, floating eerily similar to the Portuguese Man-o-war . He also kept a sample to find out more.

Some two years ago I saw hundreds of them washed ashore at Ramla L-Hamra. It was around March I think. There was even an article about them on Times of Malta.

It's difficult to tell at this distance, but I believe those are Velella.

Today there were a whole patch of these hdyroids floating at Hondoq Bay. At first they looked as small bits of scattered blue plastic. They are harmless and children were playing with them.

Very interesting, I'm sure the VETS at San Lucian could shed a light of what are. I once saw something similar off the coast of Alaska and the captain said that they regurgirated baby squids from a whale. In the photo they look like small bluebottles ( jellyfish )

I think they're purple sails. They're generally harmless...

It is incredible how the creatures of nature adapt to make use of the forces of nature and travel huge distances. Yet mankind, with all his knowledge and creativity, still makes use of fossil fuels for everyday life. In the process we are destroying nature. It is a pity,

I can't remember their name but these jellyfish have nothing to do with the man-o-war. They have a tiny "sail" which helps them to move around using the wind. Sometimes large numbers are washed ashore.

These are Velella velella, also called by the wind sailor. Each one is actually a hydroid colony, and are generally harmless to humans.
