Labour MP 'acknowledges' corruption under pre-1987 Labour governments

The Nationalist Party has called on Labour leader Joseph Muscat to investigate former ministers after shadow minister Chris Cardona last month acknowledged on a radio programme that there was corruption under the 1971-1987 Labour governments.

Dr Cardona had said there was no doubt that corruption had taken place, the PN said.

The party said that since a number of ministers of the time were still involved in politics, it was calling on Dr Muscat to investigate what had happened, since ministers were collectively responsible.

The party was reacting to comments on corruption made this morning by Dr Muscat.

It said the government had strengthened the institutions of the country as part of the fight against corruption, in contrast to the Opposition, which had even walked out of the Committee for Democratic Change, where further strengthening of these institutions was on the agenda.

Because it is in our best interest to know who was corrupt pre-1987. Especially considering that many of the pre-1987 govt officials are still very much active within the party today. We would like to know who we will be electing next election, whether Labour with all his oldies is actually a step in the right direction!

You mean that at least TeleMalta and Enemalta, as with the management of all the rest you mention, were not lambasting examples of Dark Ages??????!!!!!!!!!! One other corruption haven not mentioned here was the Bulk Buying system!!!!

However I understand that since you probably were probably on the good receiving end you may have a different view!

Joe Micallef: With your way of reasoning, we have to assume that now you are on the good receiving end huh? You're having it good right now yeah? Possibily you don't work in a factory with 4 working days. Possibly your main source of income is not a part time job. Possibly the increase in prices of foodstuffs doesn't effect you much.

Corruption is to be condemnednot just when you are in opposition, but also when you are in power. The Pn machine apparently has lots of followers that are simply happen to keep on pointing to the past...sort of justifying it.

Joe Micallef The PN Government does not want to investigate because they have a lot to hide. Otherwise it would have taken the occasion to show that everything was above board.

same for you victor. how arrogant of you to forget the past. Today there are the institutions which investigate any claims of corruption unlike the time your party was in Government when those crying corruption were jailed. That was labour justice for your party. Arrogance of the first degree by labour stooges.

What about the PN stooges who are defending all the perceived corruption instead of clamoring for it to be investigated if they want to be taken seriously Mr Alfred Tabone

Mr Alfred Tabone I'm neither Nazzjonalist like you nor not a labourite. All that I posses have been achieved on my steam and sweat. I don't care about PN and labour. But for sure what the labour had done in the past had been only a mosquito bite of what is happening today. The PN had created a board to investigate corruption. Where is it today? This had been established to draw a line of what happened in the past and look to the future. ARROGANT are those who are stealing your monies to satiate their thirst for power. Stooges are government officials who when called to give evidence of what they had done remain silent not to let the truth come to surface. It seems that you are a hard core nazzjonalist and the corruption that is eating out democracy from the core can put people to jail when a future labour government can take this matter as the first priority. I'm saying labour because the third party was never given enough breathe in its lungs. Ignorance breathes corruption from narrow minds.

I don't know why mr.poitier call the years between 1971 to 1987 as dark years. In those years I'll remember that all the familiesof malta started to live the highest standard of living for decades with the begining of clildren allowances to the rich & poor, upgrading the minimum wage, 40 hours week, women equal pay to men, work for the maltese people with Sea Malta, Air Malta, Mid Med Bank Nationalist & Labourites and many other things. Of course there were some down falts, who do every thing good. Even Christ when he chosen his appostles for His Church there was one who didn't made it to the end.One last thing to say is when the labour government ended his riegn he left Lm 500 millions in the maltese box plus a Healty Seamalta & Air Malta all the Banks Operating in Malta.

I've only heard stories of these years, but I agree that they were the dark years of Malta...whenever My dad talks about life under Mintoff or KMB, i've never seen such a look of fear in his eye

Alfred Tabone Thank you for admitting that your PN party was also corrupt because if every entity was corrupt you are admitting that your PN was also corrupt.
