I would like to support Victor Cavallo's letter (June 1) on short-sighted traffic measures in Sliema.

While there is a lot to be said for traffic calming, traffic humps should be properly designed and be used with parsimony as they may cause some damage to vehicles and carriageways and they certainly produce noise and disturbance, increased fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and sometimes accidents.

Regarding the no-right turn sign at the bottom of Tigné Street, this is very ill-considered as it makes no sense in traffic engineering to divert traffic to a congested area when all it wants is to avoid it. There is no danger for vehicles to cross the path of practically stationary traffic and proceed on their way without adding to the more or less continuous traffic jam. All that is required is a small bay painted with diagonal lines to encourage the crawling-through traffic to give way to turning traffic, which has to proceed with due caution.
