Hondoq ir-Rummien consultation period extended
The consultation period suggestions on the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed Hondoq ir-Rummien project has been extended to June 11, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority said.
It said in a statement the extension was being made to provide the public, councils and non-governmental organisations with ample time to evaluate and study the assessments drawn up by the EIA consultant.
It referred to reports of the consultation meeting, chaired by a senior officer from the Environment Protection Directorate, at the Qala government school on May 27, and said that a request for some present to comment in English could not be acceded to as members of the audients objected to it.
This objection constrained the authority to abide by the legislation regulating EIA procedures, which stated that ‘the language of the public hearing shall be in Maltese.’
Mepa said that besides the public meeting, the public consultation had been carried out since the April 20, giving anyone the opportunity to submit in writing any comments they wished to make pertaining to the EIA.
All submissions were being accepted and acknowledged by Mepa. Written comments could be submitted in both Maltese or English.
Copies of the draft Environmental Impact Statement may be inspected at Mepa, St. Francis Ravelin, Floriana and the Qala Local Council during office hours. Digital copies of the EIS are available on CD from Mepa offices.
Written submissions on the impact of the proposed development should be sent to the director, Environment Protection Directorate, Malta Environment & Planning Authority, St Francis Ravelin, Floriana or on eiamalta@mepa.org.mt, by June 11.

O yea. Do you think the Mepa care what th?y are doing to the country>! Its there land now. By the year 2020 we will be a huge concrete monster. Honduq ir-rummien is where i used to go swim when i was 10 and 11. This is just sad. The mepa are trying their best to ruin the land of malta and gozo. With marsalforn developement taking place and the bridge being taught about, Gozo is going to become just like Malta. The mepa dont care what we say. They just want to destroy our land.

John Borg, you are either a developer, or a coward, or living on the dark side of the moon. Yes the environment belongs to all of us, because it effects all of us economically, physical, and psychologically. So if you want to play it smart being so technical then I suggest you go and tell all the asthmatic in Fgura and the young people in Marsaxlokk dying of cancer that it is all nice BLA BLA BLA because some Mr John Borg thinks that the people have no right with regards to environmental issues because it does not belong to them, even if it is killing them. Stop this Technicality it might prove to be very dangerous in the near future. Our people are getting sick and some are dying. WAKE UP MAN AND START DEALING WITH IT AS A RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN. Whats more as a Maltese living abroad I can tell you that we have been off the tourist list because of what is going in Malta and Gozo . So much for sustainable development MEPA.

Well, doesn't matter what I think I know, because I am ONLY a foreigner. My voice is not to be heard in MY native tongue, and recognised official language here. BUT it is OK, fine and dandy for me to write in English.

The only action that MEPA should take is to SCRAP the project and not even consider it. Remember it is in an ODZ.

and then they tell us it is eco-gozo!! and pigs fly!!!! what a shamefull and disgusting attitude. We have become a land full of cranes here, trucks there and dirt everywhere!! and we claim that we want tourist! BAH. Hondoq is beautiful as it is, if it is developed, it would be just another place by the sea, and eyesore to tourist on board the vessels waiting to visit th so called eco- gozof .

The time has come for all people who are against the development at Hondoq to come together irrespective if you live in Malta or Gozo and hold a protest . We should go to the Court
in Malta ,then MEPA , then Auberge De Castille and make it clear to the present Government
that we the citizens of the Maltese Islands, do not want any more abuse of what little is left of our natural environment . Consideration should also be given as to what legal action can be taken by the citizens at the European Court of Justice against the present government if need be. This should be the responsibility of all the local environmentalist and it is your
responsibility each and every one of us to participate so that the present government gets a clear massage . Once Hondoq is gone it is gone forever. Same goes for other part in Malta
Wake up and fight for what belongs to all of us and our children, and not just for the so called developers ( Fat CATS ).
