According to a publication of the European Commission, 93 per cent of Maltese have shown they agree that the minimum age for the consumption, purchase and possession of alcohol should be raised to 18 years.

Answering a parliamentary question by Carmelo Abela (PL), Family Minister Dolores Cristina said the minimum age had been set for the first time ever in Malta at 16. It had then been raised to 17 in 2009.

She said Sedqa Agency has been pushing for the 18-year minimum for a number of years.
