Inquiry report 'positive' but no change for students - KSU
The University Students' Council has expressed concern at the findings of the report issued by the Board of Inquiry appointed to evaluate the events that led to the suspension of funds managed by the EUPA.
"KSU believes that the fact that a number of critical observations were repeatedly not dealt with adequately by the Agency is of great concern and raises questions as to why these were not tackled in a timely manner. KSU condemns the fact that the notification that the programmes may be suspended had been given by the Commission as early as August last year, and that the necessary precautions for this not to happen were not taken. The lengthy delays by those concerned could have been avoided, especially in the light of the fact that as elicited in point 5.5 of this report, action was taken too late in the day where the suspension could have otherwise been avoided."
The council said that although the inquiry was a positive step forward, it had not resolved anything for students who were still being held back from completing their projects and plans under the YiA and Life Long Learning Programmes.
"The current status quo is still unacceptable for students," it said.
"KSU believes that the necessary disciplinary steps must be taken, but equally important is the fact that leaving students in the dark in this manner is unacceptable. KSU believes that students should be given replies, in order for them to be able to proceed with their plans and studies abroad.
It asked if students who were refused by the University of their first preference because of the situation shall be given a chance to go to their second University preference instead.
Furthermore, it was still unclear who would be financing the grants to be given to students for them to be able to participate in these exchanges, and whether the students would be refunded for the expenses incurred because of these programmes.

@ KSU
Imagine what would have been your attitude if this happened under a Labour administration! I think that most of you would still be chained to the fence around the auberge de Castille in protest.......but....oh silly me!....it is the PN in administration and so the puppets in KSU are under control!

Pls note that only MEP Louis Grech had raised the students and youths concern within the European platea, in the European Parliament. Well done Louis, you prove again that you are near the citizens as always.

Before accusing these three people I believe that more light should be shed on this issue. I have known Prof. Bezzina for years at University at the Faculty of Education. I have always known him as a meticulous person and attentive on all minimal details, therefore I find it hard to believe that he ignored recommendations made by the European Commision for years!!! Prof. Bezzina for years has been the coordinator of the M.Ed in Administration and Management at the University of Malta, conducted hundreds of lectures and visits during teaching practice and above all used to take care with great care and attention of the students' placements in schools during teaching practice. This apart from being the author of various books on the teaching profession!!! A person with all these qualities and credentials can't act in such an irrisponsible way - thats why I find it hard to believe this inquiry report!!!

Profs Bezzina has only been perm sec for the last 9 months. Although Bezzina could be partially responsible, this issue has long been coming. Where is the Perm Sec who held the post prior to profs bezzina and under whose leadership this whole kawlata was cooked.

Dear Sean Zammit, I am sure that Professor Bezzina is the type of person you described even though I do not know him, but I rely on your comments which seem factual and convincing.
My problem is, how can anybody fulfil the full time responsibilities of a Permanent Secretary and do other commitments such as those mentioned by you. The duties of a Permanent Secretary normally consume much more than the standard 40-hour week and also implies after office work. No wander the tasks related to the EU Funding were falling behind schedule. More so, if his backing workforce was also below those established as normally is the case with most of the Civil Service.
I am more than convinced that Professor Bezzina is hard working man, but you cannot overstrecth yourself beyond any limits.
