House committee rejects call for dockyard contracts inquiry
An Opposition motion calling on the Auditor-General to investigate the loss-making Fairmount ship-conversion contracts of Malta Shipyards was defeated in the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee this morning.
The motion was moved by Labour MP Charles Mangion. There were five votes against and two in favour.
The motion had also called for the Auditor to investigate the role of supervisory authorities in contracts to be paid from public funds.
Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said the motion was, at best, divisive because as a general rule the committee took decisions by consensus.

Is this an attempt to white wash the obscene loss of tens of millions of Euros of taxpayers' moneys, or what???
Is this the way to dispense of hard earned taxpayers' money ??
Is it that no one is to be held accountable (political and/or otherwise) for such a massive and shameful fracsas, paid for by taxpayers?
Shame !!

Confusion galore;
As far as I know the Auditor general has to conduct an inquiry on any issue as long as three members of the Public Accounts Committee makes such a request.
Where is the opposition????

So Gonzi tells everybody to go and report all irregularities or corruption to the Commissioner of Police and Austin Gatt does not even want to go to the Auditor General. As always Dr Gatt tries to run roughshod in our so called parliamentary democracy. Have some courage and the least you can do is go to the Auditor General for a true and proper investigation as the one on the BWSC contract. Why are you so afraid? Who is saying NO? It's a shame. Malta and its people deserve much much better.

The perceived smell of corruption is rampant again, and, wonder of wonders, seems to follow the minister the smell of the unwashed. If I were him I would do ANYTHING to rid myself of this smelly perception by agreeing wholeheartedly with any investigative measure that sheds some light on the true facts of the matter. To do otherwise is indicative of either an arrogant supremacist attitude or else a guilty conscience troubled by what could come to light.

I agree with Minister Gatt 'the motion was, at best, divisive because as a general rule the committee took decisions by consensus'-however for the sake of transparancy and accountability the consensus should have been to hold an inquiry, unless he has something to hide that is.

Dear Dr. Gatt,
What a cover up. 40 to 60 million Euros of taxes from Hoe Citizen and you and your clan voted against an inquiry by the auditor general.
Clear evidence that you and your clan have a lot to cover up and hopefully some day to answer for.

This shows that the Government has got a lot to hide about the whole matter.
If it didn't they would have approved an inquiry.
WHAT DOES THE GOVERNMENT AND THOSE INVOLVED HAVE TO HIDE?
