12 countries to go ahead with EU divorce law cooperation
The legal affairs committee of the European Parliament has given its go-ahead for 12 member states to cooperate in divorce and legal separation law.
The decision, which has to be endorsed at a plenary sitting of the European Parliament next month, will allow couples who come from different countries to choose which country's laws should be applicable if they wish to separate or divorce. They must have a close connection with the chosen country, either by nationality or residence.
Malta is not among the countries which have opted to move ahead with cooperation, but it is considering its participation limitedly to separation cases, since it does not allow divorce.

Onwards and backwards!The most fundamental freedom of all is the freedom of choice and whether we accept it or not divorce is a fundamental part of such freedom for whatever reason,as proven by all the countries in the world where this freedom is enshrined in legislation (except us and the Phillippines alone)and sometimes it is not even a choice because of circumstances.What a preposterous ostrich-like stance to adopt.

This would probably be one of the longest queues in Maltese History if not the Guiness book of Records if it became legal. Probably save many family problems as well.

Why is Malta so afraid of divorce? But then cohabitation seems to run rampant without any restrain. The authorities also sanction the unknown fathers, by letting these losers abandon their children. It is amazing how they let gays and lesbians exist. (somewhat). In something as important as this, why not put this to a vote and let the public decide? Or maybe it is not the government that is running the country. Malta and Malawi are the only 2 countries that do not allow divorce but yet Malta condones cohabitation. Can't have it both ways.

I think that the government should not be pressurised to introduce divorce in Malta by other European countries. I think that this issue should be discussed and resolved by the maltese in a mature way. Although I agree with divorce I do not agree that it will be handed out easily. A strict set of rules should be implemented so that only genuine cases gets the divorce. I do not want that some people abuse marriage either.
On the other hand it is good that separation laws will be uniform and recognised throughout Europe. Divorce or separation shopping should be discouraged.

@Sander Depasquale
What is there to discuss about Divorce? The verdict is out - Divorce is a civil necessity and a civil right, a fact recognised by nearly all countries of the world today.
If there is one topic that has been talked and debated to death in Malta it is Divorce. We might as well be debating such items as, whether the earth is flat or whether the sun revolves around the earth, or if fairies really exist or we can even discuss if garlic keeps away vampires. These things have been decided a long time ago and we do not need to re-invent the wheel. The Maltese are not some separate species - what applies to other humans in other parts of the world also applies to them. The human condition is the same everywhere.
The time has now long come for less talk and more action when it comes to Divorce. As it is, we are becoming the laughing stock of the world. Malta desperately needs Divorce legislation NOW.

Good. Wise decision from the Maltese Government.
