Melita's high-definition TV service was officially inaugurated on Thursday by Communications Minister Austin Gatt during an event at Melita's Naxxar store.

The launch came as Melita kicked off installations of its new netbox HD in commercial outlets and households throughout the week.

The box is revolutionising the TV experience by making HD television possible for the first time ever in Malta. It allows the personalisation of viewing through the facility to pause, rewind and record live television.

Viewers will also be able to make use of a completely redesigned electronic programme guide and media centre which includes a 320Gb in-built hard disk and USB inputs.

"We promised to transform TV viewing in Malta from a linear model controlled by TV station managers to a personalised experience where our customers can watch what they want, when they want. This is the promise we are delivering today," Melita chief executive officer Andrei Torriani said.

Besides sports content, including fixtures from the 2010 World Cup, Melita's HD content includes 10 new HD channels which will be added for free to the XL channel line-up.

Customers who subscribe to Melita HD by the end of June will be entitled to free installation of the new netbox HD. Melita is also to waive the €10 monthly rental fee of the set-top box until October 1.

Customers who are currently subscribed to Melita's digital television may keep their digital set-top box on another TV for free until December 31.

Melita is showcasing the netbox HD and HD channels at its stores in Paola, Naxxar and Valletta. For more information visit www.melita.com/HD.
