The left-wing Social Democrats and the right-wing Civic Democrats were tied in the Czech general election today with an estimated 20 per cent of the vote each, Czech Television said, citing exit polls.
The news came as a surprise as the Social Democrats (CSSD) had led opinion polls with 30 per cent, while the Civic Democrats (ODS) only scored 20 per cent.
The newly-formed rightist TOP 09 came third with 17 per cent, followed by the Communists and another new party, the centrist Public Affairs, with 11 per cent each.
The Christian Democrats could also make it to the parliament with five per cent of the vote.
Turnout was expected to reach 62 per cent.
