Detectives launched a murder investigation yesterday following the discovery of a baby's body at a railway station.

The newborn infant girl was discovered at around 11.20 a.m. yesterday morning by a cleaner who was emptying bins near to the southbound platform at Fleet station in north Hampshire.

An ambulance was called, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was taken to hospital and the baby was found to have suffered injuries. Detectives are working closely with British Transport Police to establish how the baby, a white girl, came to be at the railway station and are urgently trying to trace the child's mother.

Detective Superintendent Jason Hogg, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This is now a murder inquiry and our priority is to trace the baby's mother.

"She will have recently given birth and is likely to need medical attention herself and I would urge her to go to a hospital or a police station so she can receive the treatment she needs.

"The location where the baby was found is an extremely busy train station platform, and there would have been many people who would have been through this area over the last 24 hours.

"Did you see anything? Did you notice anything suspicious? Do you know anyone who is pregnant who you are now concerned about? If you have any information that can help us, please get in touch."
