Waste separation had to be better enforced by the government so that Malta became cleaner, primary school student Luigi Sammut said.

"The quicker Maltese people understand the need to separate waste, the cleaner Malta will be," he said as he read out a letter addressed to Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino.

"In the last two years, 22,000 tons of recyclable waste has been collected. Thank you for helping us to address this but there is a lot left to do," Mr Pullicino told him.

Luigi, from Santa Tereża College primary school, wrote the winning letter in a Dinja Waħda (One World) competition aimed at increasing children's environmental awareness.

Children from 16 schools yesterday read their letters to the minister raising their environmental concerns. The event was organised by BirdLife Malta and Bank of Valletta.
