Four teenagers in a car were injured when they held a breath-holding contest and the driver fainted.

Police said the three 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy were travelling together when they decided to try to hold their breath for a third of a mile while passing through a rural area of Rochester in New York state.

The driver, Bryan Parslow, lost consciousness and his car hit a boulder.

He was given a driving ticket for failing to stay in his lane. Parslow is a paraplegic for whom the car was specially equipped to drive.

All four were treated at a hospital and released.
