Caught smoking in prohibited areas

In the first four months of this year, 834 people were caught smoking in prohibited areas, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Carmelo Abela.

The police are taking action against the culprits, who were caught in 23 localities.

A better solution would be to close down the establishment for one Saturday night on the first offence and then keep doubling that. Fining someone €50, especially an owner will not deter them. Real revenue fines are the only solution.

I agree. I was in a bar at the weekend in Paceville at the bottom of the St Rita steps trying to wtach some football where several people, were smoking particularly in the back section. The bar owner said that he couldn't stop them and theat he would lose business if he tried. I immediately left the bar, so I assume he lost business anyway.

Aren't there any plain clothes police/wardens making regular unannounced visits to these establishments? Whenever there is an Italian Series A, Champions League or major footballing match there are ALWAYS people smoking in these places with the full knowledge of the owner/manager.
