Maltese school wins European Flick the Switch Champion award
St Francis School of Cospicua has won the European Flick the Switch Champion award during the official closing ceremony held in Rakvere, Estonia.
The award was for activities related to energy saving and for teaching pupils to switch off lights and electrical devices when not in use.
Flick the Switch is a European-wide initiative supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe programme (IEE). Over 850 European schools and some 100,000 students, including 65 schools and 12,000 students from Malta, took part.
Another Maltese school the Kullegg San Benedittu Boys’ Secondary, Kirkop, was also awarded for its achievements towards energy efficiency with the official Flick the Switch regional energy saving champion flag.
St Francis received the official Flick the Switch winning plaque to honour the outstanding achievements during this campaign.
Over the course of the project (October to May), the campaign has resulted in over 16,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions being saved in schools and well over 24,000 tonnes in European households.
The Flick the Switch project is being organised by a consortium of 11 European organisations, and is part-funded by the European Commission’s Intelligent Energy Europe programme. The local partners were Motion Ltd. (www.pim.com.mt) and Ekoskola Malta.

Some of the comments remind me of the two grumpy old men who used to feature in the Muppets' Show. Irrespective of what happened on stage they always managed to criticize it ... while they remained comfy comfy in their stall.
I had hoped that certain readers would appreciate that these kids are doing something tangible re the energy crisis rather than just being passive pessimists. Through our lifestyles and choices we've managed to muck up their future ... let us be decent enough to acknowledge their effort to resolve the mess they're inheriting.
To the schools who have participated in this and other similar projects: Well done! Keep up the good work.

Actually there wasn't any need for the Maltese to participate in this "Flick the Switch" nonsense. We're always first to live in the dark. In fact, we've become so accustomed with powercuts that we don't have to flick the switch but Enemalta does it for us!

And how much energy was used and CO2 emitted to gather representatives of these schools in Estonia?

Don't be fooled Maltese people, however grim my comments may apear, they are true.
it is not true that we are moving into the age of clean, renewable energy supplies. What is true is that we are moving into an age of not enough energy to support modern industrial civilization.
There are 10 K-calories of petroleum energy spent for every 1 K-calorie of food energy produced by modern agriculture. When that abundance of petroleum-based energy goes away, 90% of our food calories will go away. That's simple thermodynamics, and there's no way around it. And that means 90% of earth's population will starve.
We are not dancing cheerfully into happy Tomorrowland where the skies are blue and the birds are singing, we are sliding down a treacherous slope into Dante's Inferno where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Life on earth is going to be shear hell for a long time to come.

Well done to the school and in particular to Sr. Claudia Zammit, the Head of School for supporting such activities and pushing the name of the school forward. Well done also goes to all the staff and students. Keep it up.

How can we nominate Enemalta's own Boiler no. 7 for this award?

Our road repairs/maintenance department should get this prize.
On second thoughts maybe a Nobel Prize would be more appropriate.
After all they are the biggest energy savers of them all.
