Fishmarket to move to larger premises in Marsa
The fishmarket (pixkerija) is to be moved from Grand Harbour to a state of the art facility in Marsa in just over two years' time.
The transfer of the fishmarket was confirmed in Parliament yesterday by Resources Minister George Pullicino.
Paul Fenech Gonzi, Director, Wholesale Markets and Fishing Fleet Facilities, said the move was made necessary by the need to install modern equipment and improve facilities.
The new fishmarket will be located on the site of a former reverse osmosis plant.
The project, to the funded mostly through the European Fisheries Fund, will include six chillers instead of the current two, a processing and packaging plant, and a crate washing facility, among other services.
The current fishmarket building, on the water's edge close to the old Customs House, was built some 50 years ago.
Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said the building could in future be used as a boutique hotel.

Is this for real?!
So we have just demolished a british eyesore which was obstructing Castille bastion in Vittoriosa and now we are planning to use the fishmarket as a boutique hotel (!) of all things!
I'm sure tourists coming into Grand harbour will be jostling the rails to catch a glimpse of this beauty.

I know who the PM was at that time, as I stated ("....a former PM ruined a part of Lower ...) I avoided a politically tainted comment on purpose because, for me, it not an issue what the colour of the PM was at that time (or now), but that NO further mistakes be committed in the name of progress.
So, as you correctly stated, nowadays we have MEPA, and our minds will be at rest!

"a boutique hotel....?" Why not demolish the building and embelish this scenic waterfront for everyone to enjoy! It is enough that a former PM ruined a part of Lower Barrakka to guage a road leading from the Fishmarket to The Mediterranean Hall for Conferences! ( a tunnel road would have done the trick). I hope that there would not be any exploitation for the sake of a grand view of the Grand Harbour.

For correctness sake it was a Labour government under the architect Mintoff which demolished part of the bastion to construct the road that leads to the MCC.

"the building could in future be used as a boutique hotel"....
Dear Minister,
Selling more family silver is only a short term solution. We need better financial manager, more accountability. My wife has worked in incoming tourism for the past 20 years and tells me that new hotels will not solve any problems. We need better management of the existing tourist product, not new features.
