It costs Transport Malta between €2,000 and €3,500 in preparatory work for each bus shelter it installs, while the shelters themselves do not cost it anything because of sponsorships, it has been revealed in Parliament.
Transport Minister Austin Gatt said there are 456 bus shelters in Malta and Gozo and TM is in the process of replacing 43. Another batch will be replaced later this year as part of the public transport reform.
The preparatory work for the bus shelters is made by various contractors and the actual installation is also made by a private contractor.
The preparatory work costs between €2,000 and €3,500 for each bus shelter while the shelters themselves do not cost the Authority anything because costs are covered by advertising.
Dr Gatt said local councils are obliged to maintain the bus shelters in the residential roads.
