Censu Galea to be nominated Deputy Speaker
Censu Galea.
The Nationalist Party's parliamentary group has agreed to nominate former Transport and Communications Minister Censu Galea to serve as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
PN whip David Agius said the decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the group this afternoon.
Notice of a motion for the appointment of Mr Galea was presented to the Clerk of the House of Representatives this evening.
Mr Galea has been an MP for 23 years and was whip of the PN group between 1996 and 1998.
He will succeed Labour MP Carmelo Abela, who resigned in protest over a ruling by the Speaker after a vote taking during the debate on the power station extension.

A seasoned politician who never kept back from airing his views - this as far as his early coming into the political arena. Despite the repercussions, he never became bitter.
A pleasant and approacheable gentleman, who has always rolled up his sleeves to get things done himself .
Censu Galea - a moderate man, who can also act as a modearator if the situation so warrants.
I augur him and our institution well - and together with Michael Frendo, hope they usher in a new way of doing things.
When the going may get tough, the tough must get going.

This says that eight former Ministers and the former Opposition leader would be ''receiving E157,000 from the Prime Minister in the form of a 'terminal benefit'. The former Ministers were Louis Deguara, Ninu Zammit, Censu Galea, Francis Zammit Dimech, Jesmond Mugliett, Edwin Vassallo, Michael Frendo and Tony Abela.
I had thought Dr. Louis Galea was included but this does not seem to have been the case. I apologise to Dr. L. Galea.
The Hon. Prime Minister has to date not given sound enough reasons to explain his benevolence. He has started a bad precedent which is, as far as I know, not covered by what the Constitution allows.
To stem criticism from the P.L. he included Dr. Alfred Sant in his ''list''!
Really now is this the correct way to go about administering public money?
This episode made me see that Dr. Gonzi would do anything to prevent discontent that might undermine his slim majority.
When he further paid his discontent backbenchers taxpayer money as 'overtime remuneration' and seconded them to Ministries his ethical / financial credentials reached rock bottom with me.

Pity Carmelo Abela resigned then you would have not have had to complaint about it being a blue-eyed boy political appointment. Once again LP missed the boat and lost but then you would not have had anything to moan about. Do not worry if and when LP is in government no doubt there will be many polictical appointments too.

I congratulate Perit Censu Galea and wish him every success in being IMPARTIAL in decison making during his duration as Dep. Speaker.
I was and am still in favour of the speaker of the house as well as the deputy to be nominees who are neither connected to govt nor opposition let alone being part of any political party. This role demands impartiality at all times.
Just imagine how things would have developed had this been the case .
I would also specify conditions that the person who may occupy such a post must be one qualified and certified to have studied Law.
This system would also keep the house on guard and not rely on assuming what the speaker would do given that he/she would submit a casting vote knowing what political tendency such a person will have.
Maybe both sides of the house would agree on this , just like what was agreed upon with the nomination of our President Dr. George Abela.
I am sure our President is respected by the great majority of us.
This result is thanks to a decision taken and agreed upon by both sides of the house. Well done in this case.

What would anyone expect? Censu is already an MP, Former deputy speaker resigned and if The PM offered the nominee to the PL I am sure the party would have refused it. So the PM has to nominate someone from his party.
Well done Dr Gonzi and good luck Censu Galea, you deserve it for what you did to the party and the country. I still remember those days when we used to work at the Stamperija in the 70's and 80's.

Mr. Censu Galea failed to make it tot he Cabinet after the last general election and (along with a number of other former ministers) probably received a tidy sum of taxpayer money from benevolent Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi who then took it upon himself to generously hand over taxpayer money presumably to ''bail out the unsuccessful ministers in a time of financial hardship''! Solidarity...indeed! I do not know if the Constitution allows such scandalous goings-on (and precedents) to happen...I very much doubt it in fact. Will the new Deputy Speaker now be returning the money he received then, taxpayers are bound to ask? After all he will presumably be remunerated for his new post of Deputy Speaker. N.B. Other ex-ministers Dr. Louis Galea and the new speaker Dr. Frendo have also been found lucrative posts somewhere or other but, as far as is known they have not returned the money Dr. Gonzi freely handed out.... So it is to be assumed that neither will Mr. Censu Galea do so. HOW'S THAT FOR FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY BY THIS ADMINISTRATION? And our Prime Minister Dr. Gonzi expects citizens to admire him and to take him seriously!

what are you amazed about my friend.. we have leader of the opposition, future prime minster wannabee and president of the EU who has never been elected in a local election?? and your are surprised about a non elected deputy speaker??

I fail to understand what lucrative money is Mr Grech referring to. He must be living in his own dreams and seems to have very short memory. He forgot that previous labour administrations did exactly the same thing and offered similar positions to the Socialist boys. Gonzi should have offered the Deputy Speaker position to a PN candidate from the very beginning. He should have realized that Muscat was never interested in offering any pairing.

To all the Politically Blinkered P.N. commentators:
I could not care a fig about the petty drivel that you bring up. Kindly reread what I had to say and then reply to just that. I never said political appointments are alright if made by the Partit Laburist or any other party.
I just said and repeat - our Prime Minister acted despotically when he handed taxpayer money to the M.P.s who failed to make it to Parliament last time round. Or have you forgotten he actually was silly enough to do that?
Now if you lot are happy having somebody do such illicit things with the taxes you presumably pay, then I AM NOT.
I have long decided never to vote for the P.N. again - no matter how many meetings are set up at Villa Arrigo and elsewhere just before the election to convince ex P.N. voters!
I had high hopes in the P.M. once. He has disappointed me enormously. He blames the P.L. for the trouble his intransigence and administrative inefficiency causes in this country. That's the way I see it!
