A Somali man living at the Marsa open centre yesterday told a magistrate he was manhandled by police in what he claimed was a racially-motivated assault.

The claim made by Mustaf Mohammed Isse, 36, prompted Magistrate Edwina Grima to direct the Police Commissioner to investigate these claims and take appropriate action if required.

Mr Isse denied either offending the policeman or being impolite, adding that as a result of the attack he suffered injuries to his back as well as bites.

Mr Isse was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000.
