The son of Education Minister Dolores Cristina has filed a libel suit against the newspaper l-orizzont after a front page article concerning him appeared on Monday about the suspension of two EU educational programmes.

Alessandro Cristina, who is a programmes manager within the local EU Programmes Agency, filed the libel suit against the paper's acting editor Josef Caruana for comments which he claimed were libellous.

The article identified Mr Cristina as one of the officers responsible for the European Commission's decision to suspend student funds after it highlighted mismanagement in the department.

Mr Cristina is holding Mr Caruana responsible for any damages.
