Malta and China today commenced discussions to update the current agreement for the avoidance of double taxation (DTA).
A Maltese delegation of experts is visiting China for technical discussions which follow the meetings held last month in Beijing by Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg.
Twelve bilateral agreements were signed in 2009 in the fields of education, health, judicial matters, culture, trade and investment. A number of agreements on commerce were signed, including the bilateral guarantee of investments and Memorandums of Understandings (MoUs) between the MFSA and Chinese counterparts in the regulation, banking and securities business regulation, in banking and financial services. In the last four years bilateral trade with China has increased by 140 per cent.
In the past 22 months, the government signed 19 DTAs, a concrete example of the efforts being undertaken by the Government to attract foreign direct investment to Malta and to boost further commercial activities by the Maltese business community, the ministry said.
