US astronauts began the first of three planned spacewalks yesterday from the shuttle Atlantis a day after the spacecraft docked with the International Space Station.

Astronauts Garrett Reisman and Stephen Bowen began the planned 6.5-hour spacewalk at 7.54 a.m. (1150 GMT) to install a second space-to-ground antenna and a spare parts platform on Dextre, the two-armed robotic device on the ISS.

It was the 237th spacewalk by US astronauts, the second for Reisman and the fourth for Bowen, according to Nasa.
