Families and tourists yesterday took guided tours of the historic Fort Rinella in Kalkara and watched historical re-enactments, during an open day organised by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, which manages the fort.

The highlight for many was the firing of the deafening 100-ton gun - the world's largest cannon. It had not been fired for the past three years due to filming in the nearby film studios.

Fort Rinella is a late Victorian coastal battery built for the gun in 1878. The monster cannon could fire a one-ton shell up to a distance of eight miles.
