A cast of 150 secondary school students at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, St Julian's, with the help of a team of teachers, put up their adaptation of the popular London West End show, We Will Rock You, as part of their prize day celebrations last weekend.
Based on the music of Queen, and with an original script by Ben Elton, We Will Rock You is set in the future of Earth, which has now been called Planet Mall.
Globalisation is complete and the age of Gaga has dawned. Everyone dresses in the same manner, thinks the same ideas and is brainwashed to conform to the norm. All musical instruments have been banned and the only music which is allowed is that manufactured by the Globalsoft Corporation.
Finally a couple of rebels try to break the mould. They want to create music; to be individually expressive. These are Galileo (Emma Maria Grech) and Scaramouche (Danielle Ciantar), who join forces with the Bohemians and finally rediscover rock 'n'roll.
The message behind the plot is that being different is never negative. Individualism is desirable for diversity and for creativity. It is about acceptance of oneself and of others.
The main aim behind the school's production is to give an opportunity to as many students as possible to be on stage and express themselves using drama, song and dance.
