Tal-Ħniena Chapel, a 17th century chapel in Qrendi dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, is being restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa (DLĦ). The restoration of the chapel, which had fallen into serious decay over the centuries, is being sponsored by Bank of Valletta.

The baroque chapel, built between 1650 and 1668, is considered an architectural jewel and has been accredited to architect Mederico Blondel. The main altar is adorned with exquisite stone carvings while the 17th century titular painting of the Virgin of Mercy, seated on clouds and a moon with the Christ child standing on her knee, is attributed to Maltese artist Giuseppe d'Arena.

Bailiff Fra Philipp-Wolfgang von Guttenberg, a Knight of the Order of St John, was one of the main benefactors.

DLĦ president Petra Bianchi gave Tonio Depasquale, chief executive officer, BoV, a tour of the chapel highlighting its features and the restoration process. Accompanying Dr Bianchi were Andy Walsh, senior member of DLĦ, and Prof. Emmanuel Agius, the chapel's curator.

Dr Bianchi said the organisation was proud to associate itself with BoV. Through the bank's support another architectural treasure will be restored to its full dignity. This is the sixth historic chapel being restored by DLĦ.
