Just one recalled buggy sold in Malta

Only one toy buggy at the centre of a recall in both Europe and America because of possible dangers to children was sold in Malta. Step2's Push Around buggy was sold just days before the Early Learning Centre removed the model from its shelves after a design flaw was identified.

Another of Step2's products, the car-shaped toy buggy Whisper Ride, was also recalled abroad but is not sold at the local branch of Mothercare, which stocks it in the UK. The two models were recalled earlier this week after it was found that the long handle which adults push could detach from the buggy, leading to a loss of control of the wheeled toy and potential danger for children.

Step2, a US-based toy company, said models which had a pin with a yellow plastic knob should stop being used until a repair kit was installed.

Early Learning Centre managing director Alexandra Mizzi said the local store started stocking the Push Around buggy recently, with the first batch arriving about two weeks ago.

"We sold just one before withdrawing them after receiving a product recall from the UK," Dr Mizzi said, adding that the buyer could contact the store.

More than 2.5 million buggies were recalled in the US and Canada on Wednesday after two children were injured when their carers lost control of the buggies when the handles detached.
