A shoplifter was given a suspended jail term after being caught red-handed on a security camera stealing a gold necklace worth €1,200.

Mailood Maolod, 23, from Libya, pleaded guilty on Thursday.

When confronted by the police, he at first denied stealing the necklace from Solid Gold jewellers in Sliema on Friday. But he soon confessed when shown the footage taken from the shop's closed-circuit television camera.

The police recovered the necklace after Mr Maolod gave them the name of the person who bought it.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani handed down a two-year jail term suspended for four.
