A man confessed to stealing a gold necklace worth €1,200 from a jeweller's shop only after the police confronted him with footage from a security camera.

Libyan national Mailood Maolod, 23, at first denied stealing the necklace from Solid Gold jewellers in Sliema last Friday at about 5.15 p.m. However, he had no choice but to admit to the crime when he was shown the video taken from the shop's closed-circuit TV camera, a court heard yesterday.

He said he had sold the necklace and the police informed Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani they were still trying to recover it.

After filing a guilty plea, Mr Maolod was remanded in custody awaiting judgment today.

Police Inspector Jesmond Micallef prosecuted.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo appeared for Mr Maolod.

Lawyer Mark Busuttil appeared parte civile.
