A new waterpolo club came to life last month when the Cottonera Aquatic Club was launched during an activity at the Senglea Nursery headquarters.

In the presence of representatives from the nurseries of St George's and Vittoriosa, Stephen Spiteri, the Senglea Nursery president, told those present that his club did not cater only for football but is spanning its wings in other sectors with the sole aim of attracting more youngsters from the vicinities to the sport.

Cottonera Aquatic has the backing of other organisations in this venture but will not be rushing to reach its goals. In fact, they are only planning to introduce team competition at junior national level next year.

"This season, our objective is to introduce the technical skills of the sport to those interested in joining the waterpolo team. Our players will be trained by professional coaches. We intend to have our first Cottonera Aquatic junior team taking part in national competitions in 2011," Spiteri said.

This summer, apart from regular training sessions, Cottonera Aquatic will also organise a series of friendly matches to help the players get more acquainted with waterpolo and improve the team's potential and abilities before competitions.

Spiteri said the team will be managed by the Senglea Nursery officials and the administrative centre will be at their premises. The waterpolo pitch will be assembled next month near the football ground at Tal-Ponta.

"We want young people from these surroundings to join our club and get involved in this healthy sport," Spiteri said.

"This will be one strong solid team for all Cottonera people... the Cottonera Aquatic. The team will be a perfect initiative for many of our children to get involved and lead a better life."

Registration forms may be collected from the Senglea, St George's or Vittoriosa Stars nurseries or via e-mail on sengleanursery@hotmail.com. One may also obtain more details by phoning 7937-3836.
