Kid Rock, the American star who spent a short time married to showgirl Pamela Anderson, is the third artist confirmed for the biggest free open-air concert in Europe, the Isle of MTV in Malta.

Known for his hits, Cowboy and All Summer Long, he would be joining Kelis and Scissor Sisters on June 30 and another, as yet, unannounced "major international name", the show's executive producer, Jane Fraser said yesterday.

Isle of MTV, which is in its fourth and final year of its contract with Malta, already had a considerable impact on tourism, Culture Minister Mario de Marco said, adding that over the past two years there was an increase of young travellers to Malta in mid-summer.

"Malta is gaining a reputation as a happening place," Dr de Marco said, adding that many tourists liked to plan trips around such events.

The live show, which launched Lady Gaga's career and featured artists like Enrique Iglesias and the Black Eyed Peas, will this year be held after a week of related activities, including big event names like Ministry of Sound and Creamfields.

Malta Music Week, which will be held between June 25 - 30, will also heat up Gozo and Buġibba with live performances.

Thirty-six foreign journalists will be coming to Malta for the week of events and many travel agents were promoting the event as part of specific packages.

Ms Fraser said this had become a flagship event which artists looked forward to, particularly because of the hospitality and enthusiasm they received from the Maltese.

She said each year MTV chose artists who promised to provide a fantastic live show to "rock the Granaries" and create an unforgettable experience.

Asked whether the positive feedback about the event would prompt MTV to renew its contract with Malta, Ms Fraser simply said that MTV had a great relationship with the Malta Tourism Authority.
