ST discusses new production line in Malta

ST Microelectronics is having talks with the Ministry of Finance and the Economy on the possibility of opening another production line in Malta, a ministry spokesman has confirmed.

"It is far too early to comment further," the spokesman added.

The computer chip giant had been downsizing its workforce in Malta, but informed sources said the opening of the new line would, at least, assure the jobs of the current workers. There is also the possibility of further recruitment if the talks reach a successful conclusion.

The talks involve a production line in Asia which could be transferred back to Europe.
