The Royal Navy frigate HMS Lancaster called at Grand Harbour on a five-day visit yesterday afternoon.

The ship, the fourth of 16 Type 23 frigates constructed, was launched in May 1990 and commissioned two years later.

The Portsmouth-based warship is returning to the UK after a seven-month deployment to conduct maritime security operations in the Middle East, supporting international efforts to counter illegal activity in the wider region. During its deployment, the ship was also active in detecting, disrupting and deterring pirate activity off the coast of Somalia. It also conducted operations in the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea to help provide security and stability in the area.

It is berthed at Pinto Wharf and will not be open to the public.
