Updated: Kid Rock for Isle of MTV

Video: Mark Zammit Cordina

Kid Rock will be performing in the Isle of MTV concert on June 30, presenting his mix of Southern rock, blues- and country-tinged ballads, and hip-hop.

The concert will also include top American band Scissors Sisters and superstar Kelis, as well as another big artist who is yet to be announced.

Mario de Marco, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Culture, said that Isle of MTV was being held as part of the Malta Music Week between June 25 and 30, a week that was already being offered as a package by many travel agents.

The Isle of MTV, Dr de Marco said, was the biggest free open air concert in Europe and 36 foreign journalists would be covering the week long events.

These include a party at Gianpula on June 25, a Ministry of Sound Festival and a party in Gozo on June 26, a live concert in Bugibba on June 27, Creamfields Malta 2010 at Ta Qali on June 28, live music in Paceville on June 29 and the Isle of MTV concert on June 30.

The Isle of MTV, Dr de Marco said, was the show that launched Lady Gaga and relaunched the Black Eyed Peas. It was a show that was becoming more and more popular each year, a show designed to attract more young people to Malta and to brand the island as a happening location.

He said that this has been successful according to surveys and statistics because the percentages of young people travelling to Malta between June and July has increased considerably.

Executive producer Jane Fraser said the show had become a flagship summer event.

There was an amazing response especially from the artists who all commented on the hospitality and enthusiasm they found on the island.

This year, the organisers were trying to focus even more on live performing element with three artists having so far been named. The latest, Kid Rock, would give the show more of rock edge.

you' re missing the point here, concerts with Maltese artists can be organized any time of the year and surely we don't need MTV to do that. Although I can understand it would be very useful to showcase Maltese talent. If I'm not mistaken in past events Maltese artists did perform in past Isle of MTV concerts, but will obviously not headline the event as remember this is broadcast to millions on MTV and many plan their visit to Malta to coincide with this event. This is not the Eurovision!
