Lately there was correspondence relating to puzzling "inscriptions" and it was stated that the inscription quoted in a letter by Godwin Drago was never deciphered - wrong!

The story goes back to 1944 or 1945 and the inscription appeared in a story of a discovery of ancient Roman pottery. The magazine was either of RAF Headquarters, Valletta, or RAF Station Luqa - my memory is rather shaky on this! The inscription was: Itis apis potanda bigone. It was deciphered and the whole thing was an April's Fool day joke.

We had quite a good laugh at RAF Headquarters where I was stationed at the time.
